Ares has been watching AMP as a possible deal – designed to build on its push into Asia Pacific – since earlier this year.

Within days of the quarterly update, The Australian Financial Review’s Street Talk column had broken the news that Ares, based in Los Angeles and founded by former bond traders, was in talks to buy AMP.
