About 500 to 1,500 years ago, Madagascar lost nearly all of its megafauna, including giant tortoises, Dodo birds, lemurs the size of gorillas, and 10-foot-tall elephant birds that weighed half a ton. While the exact cause of these extinctions remains a mystery, a new study from the University of Innsbruck reports that human activities likely compounded the impacts of climate change when Madagascar’s giant animals simultaneously disappeared.
