A new study published on the preprint server bioRxiv* in October 2020 shows that vascular cells in the lung tissue begin to secrete signaling growth factors when exposed to just the spike protein of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), without the rest of the viral components. Since this signaling mechanism is potentially linked to worse outcomes in this condition, these findings could indicate new targets for the development of therapeutic agents.
