To receive US safety certification, a mask needs to be able to block 95% of viral particles dispelled from an infected subject. A study found that unless cloth and surgical masks are washed in accordance with guidelines established by the World Health Organization, wearers are significantly more vulnerable to infection after single-use. It added that at these temperatures, handwashing is not possible. Notably, COVID-19 cases have been reported in several US counties.
