The study was conducted in parallel with other research underway at the CSIRO’s biosecurity laboratory in Geelong.Most of the scores of vaccines being developed around the world are based on the original ‘D-strain’ of the virus.
However the virus evolves rapidly and most cases around the world are now classed as “G-strain”.
Scientists have expressed concern that a vaccine modelled on the initial strain may be less effective – or even ineffective – against later mutations.
