Regional Australians are not getting the same treatment for blood cancers as those in metropolitan areas, but new national protocols could change that.
Only when they went to their family GP in Rockhampton were blood tests ordered, confirming Mr Hodda had acute myeloid leukaemia, an aggressive form of blood cancer.
“You just have no idea how quickly your life can change,” his wife said.
Mr Hodda was rushed to Brisbane for treatment, and after 56 nights in the intensive care unit of the Wesley Hospital where he underwent more than 70 blood transfusions and a bone marrow transplant he was allowed to go home.
