Bennell retires an unfulfilled talent after hub breach – The Age
Sources with knowledge of Bennell’s contract situation say he had a good chance of winning a contract extension into 2021 before he left Melbourne’s hub, without permission, before their final game of 2020.

“Best 10 years of my life. Thank you to everyone that was involved. It was an awesome ride,” Bennell wrote.
Bennell’s decade in the AFL was interrupted by off-field indiscretions and a succession of injuries.
He was selected with pick No.2 in the 2010 draft and was widely considered an extraordinary talent.
He famously kicked four goals and had 38 disposals against Melbourne, for the Gold Coast Suns, in 2012.
