The man who coached Marie-Jose Perec for years and then Cathy Freeman in the lead-up to the Sydney Olympics is wistful at the missed opportunity to witness a great race.
“Who would have won is who would have wanted it most and was best prepared, and I know Cathy was prepared in 2000, I can’t say that about Marie-Jo because I wasn’t working with her any more.”
Having lost to Freeman and struggled for years with illness Perec had quit working with Smith, the man behind the then world 100m record holder Maurice Greene, in the lead-up to the Sydney Games and had moved to the Baltic port of Rostock to work with former East German coach Wolfgang Meier.
