Before Cathy Freeman’s epic run, the opening week of the Sydney Olympics was dominated by swimming — renewing old rivalries, making Australia a powerhouse again and cementing the greatness of a young Ian Thorpe.
It was the final race on night one of swimming at the Sydney Olympics, and as Australia’s Ian Thorpe made the final turn behind the US’s Gary Hall Jr with 50 to go in the 4x100m freestyle relay, the level of agitation was rising.
On the blocks at the other end of the pool, Chris Fydler and lead-off man Michael Klim who had broken the 100m world record, putting Australia more than a second under the 4x100m record split time for the opening leg were watching closely.
