Twenty years ago tonight, Debbie Flintoff-King rounded the bend at Sydney Olympic Park and handed the most precious flame in the world to the one and only Cathy Freeman.
Freeman, the golden girl of Australian athletics, a proud Indigenous woman and future Olympic gold medal winner accepted the torch with reverence before that iconic smile burst onto her face.
Dressed in a striking body suit that was predominantly white with blue and silver details, she turned away from Flintoff-King and began that famous jog up the stairs, past the orchestra and into a pool of dark water with more cascading behind her as she held the torch aloft for Sydney and the world to see….
