Former champion jockey Pat Smullen, who rode Vinnie Roe in three Melbourne Cups, has died.

Former champion jockey Pat Smullen, who rode Vinnie Roe in three Melbourne Cups, has died.
The nine-times Irish champion succumbed to pancreatic cancer. He was 43.
A long-time ally of dual Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Dermot Weld, Smullen retired from race riding because of the illness in 2018.
Cruelly, he was last year told he was told his health had improved and was given a positive prognosis – only to suffer a terminal relapse.
