Covid-related absences of hospital staff in England so far this winter peaked at 56,175 on January 14 2021, according to new figures from NHS England.
During the first wave of the virus absences peaked at 106,597 on April 7 2020.
The figures cover all Covid-related absences of staff, either through sickness or self-isolation.
Nearly 350,000 patients in England had been waiting more than six weeks for a key diagnostic test in December 2020.
