1997 Toyota Supra selling for nearly twice as much as a new one – CarAdvice

A pristine, limited-edition 1997 Toyota Supra has gone up for sale in Tennessee with an asking price nearly double that of a brand-new 2020 Toyota Supra available in the US.
The fourth-generation Supra – more commonly referred to as the ‘Mk4’ – is being offered by Street Side Classics in Nashville with an asking price of $US92,995 ($AU133,000).
By comparison, a brand new, fifth-generation Toyota Supra is priced from as low as US$49,990 (AU$71,100) in the US.
The targa top-bodied example is finished in Renaissance Red and is listed as a rare ‘Limited Edition 15th Anniversary’ with special badging.
With only 36,477 miles (58,704km) on the clock, the Supra’s ‘2JZ-GTE’ 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged inline six-cylinder is unlikely to have lost many of the 239kW it left the factory with in 1997.
At the time, this output propelled the Supra from a standing start to 100km/h in just 5.3 seconds, which had the car competing with much more expensive rivals. A 1997 Porsche 993 911 Carrera claimed the 0-100 sprint in only 5.6 seconds.
The Mk4 Supra gathered a cult following following the release of The Fast and the Furious, with a modified version of a targa variant featuring as the hero car of the film.
In Australia, fourth-generation Supras are also going up steadily in price, priced from $75,000 to 100,000 depending on specification. Still less than the $100,000 needed to buy a brand-new fifth-generation 2020 Toyota Supra.
