George Floyd’s murder and conviction made Australia ‘pay attention’ — now Indigenous leaders say it’s time for change

Ronnie Gorrie is hopeful the murder conviction of a man on the other side of the world will bring much-needed change to her country and community. 

Ms Gorrie says she’s seen the worst of humanity — and the worst of policing — during her 10-year career as an officer in the early 2000s.

“There were a number of deaths in custody that happened while I was in the police [service],” the Gunai-Kurnai woman said.

“It was a terrible time as a police officer. 

Indigenous young people make up 50 per cent of those in youth detention, while comprising just five per cent of the population.
