Data collected at the Department of Energy’s Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) atmospheric observatory in Utqiagvik (Barrow), Alaska, indicate that shattering drizzle droplets play a major role in the formation of “secondary” ice in mixed-phase clouds.
