Fan pods, zones and no line judges: the ins and outs of this year’s Australian Open – The Age
The Australian Open finally begins on Monday, around three weeks later than its usual start date due to the difficulties posed by COVID-19.
Usually, players are accompanied on court by ball kids, the chair umpire and line judges. Not this year, however, with the line judges completely replaced by an electronic system.
The Australian Open will be the first grand slam to do so, as a way of reducing the number of people needed on-site.
Ball tracking cameras have been set up along each line, automatically sending their decisions in real time. Rather than an computerised beep, a human voice calls out, fault and foot fault.
